Lisbon
 

Lisbon is located in Southern Portugal and has a varied history dating back nearly 2500 years. From 205BC it was ruled bt the Romans and was paid special attention by Julius Ceasar who named it Felicitas Julia.

During its history it has been ruled by European tribes adn the Moors who ruled from the 8th century. It was retaken by the Crusaders in 1147 and sine then has been a major influence on Portugese politics and its economy. Oddly enough, Lisbon is actually an 'unofficial' capital having never been granted that staus by statute.

Lisbon is the most western capital in mainland Europe. It rests on the Atlantic Ocean coast where the river Tagus flows into the Atlantic Ocean. On the western side of the city is Monsanto Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe with an area close to 10 square kilometres. 

The magnificent harbour made it an ideal spot for a settlement  that provided all manner of goods to passing Phoenician ships travelling to the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall. Recently, Phoenician remains from the 8th century BC were found beneath the main Cathedral of the modern city.

Most of the Portuguese expeditions left from Lisbon during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, including Vasco da Gama's departure to India in 1497.

During its history, Lisbon has suffered many earthquakes with one of the devastating being in 1755. This led to the city being demolished and rebuilt. During the 2nd World War, Lisbon was a neutral port, ne of only a few that offered ssanctuary and the chance of escape from war-torn Europe.

Expo '98 was held in Lisbon with the intention of celebrating the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's sea voyage to India. In March the city hosts the Lisbon Half Marathon one of the largest events of its type anywhere.

Rock in Rio, one of the biggest global music festivals has been staged in Lisbon three times, 2004, 2006 and again in 2008 and many huge stagenames and headline bands have performed there. Even the Dakar Rally has started in Lisbon. It hosted the start in 2007 and in 2006.

From September to November, Lisbon holds the Experimenta Design for design and architecture with each event having a theme. It has been taking place since 1999. Two other things you must see are the amazing Vasco De Gama bridge an the lisbon water museum.
